This study explored Indonesian public perceptions of the climate crisis, the role of government, presidential candidates’ commitments, and the role of mass media. The findings show that 81% of the public agree that the government should declare a climate emergency, with the strongest support in urban areas and among people aged 15–34. However, 60% believe the government has yet to formulate policies to prevent the climate crisis.
The online media outlets most active in covering environmental issues are CNN Indonesia and Seputar Indonesia (32%), followed by INews, Detik, and Kompas. The study also found that Anies Baswedan was perceived as the most environmentally sensitive candidate (84% positive sentiment), followed by Ganjar Pranowo (44%) and Prabowo Subianto (89%). Social media analysis showed that discussions of the energy transition are fragmented into four major communities based on central actors.
Based on the findings, the study recommends that 2024 election candidates make environmental issues a priority, support sustainable project financing schemes such as green bonds or debt-for-climate initiatives, revise regulations that harm the environment, and encourage voters to assess candidates based on their concrete commitments to the energy transition and environmental protection.
