This workshop is a joint initiative of the Center of Economic and Law Studies (CELIOS), Lingkar Keadilan Ruang, and the Alliance of Independent Journalists (Aliansi Jurnalis Independen/AJI) Yogyakarta. Rapid physical development in Yogyakarta, especially in coastal and hillside areas, has led to a variety of complex and interrelated problems. The workshop combined discussion and field trip sessions, including a visit to Gesing Beach, where government-led development has drastically altered the natural landscape of the coastal areas, even cutting through the karst hills. The purpose of the workshop is to invite journalists to amplify the perspectives and experiences of the Gunungkidul community in conserving karst landscapes and then disseminate them through mass media coverage.
