2025 Indonesia-MENA Survey: Insights into Indonesian Perception of Middle East and North Africa

Indonesia’s relationship with the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) is built on a foundation that stretches back centuries. From early trade routes linking the archipelago with the Arabian Peninsula to the spread of Islam and the exchange of ideas, Indonesia and the MENA region have long shared economic, cultural, and religious ties. In the modern era, this relationship has grown beyond historical connections, evolving into a strategic partnership with increasing collaboration across diplomacy, trade, investment, education, and energy.

In recent years, MENA countries have become key players in Indonesia’s international engagement. From the Gulf states’ investment in infrastructure and energy transition to educational and religious cooperation with countries like Egypt and Saudi Arabia, the region offers Indonesia not only economic opportunities but also a broader geopolitical platform. As Indonesia expands its global role, its engagement with MENA is poised to shape the country’s foreign policy, economic strategies, and regional partnerships in the decades to come.

Despite this growing importance, public perceptions of MENA in Indonesia have remained underexplored. How Indonesians view the region, understand its role in global affairs, and perceive its relationship with Indonesia has never been comprehensively mapped. This is a crucial gap—because public attitudes can influence the success and sustainability of international cooperation. Policies and partnerships are most effective when they are rooted in public awareness, understanding, and support.

To address this gap, CELIOS conducted the 2025 Indonesia–MENA Survey, the first national survey designed to capture Indonesian perceptions of the MENA region. The findings offer a unique snapshot of how Indonesians see MENA countries today, their expectations for future cooperation, and their views on Indonesia’s role in the region. This report provides evidence-based insights that can guide policymakers, businesses, and civil society in shaping more inclusive, informed, and forward-looking engagement with MENA—anchored not only in diplomacy and investment but also in public understanding and support.
