Jakarta, 22 August 2022 — The China-Indonesia Desk at the Center of Economic and Law Studies (CELIOS) successfully held a public discussion and the official launch of the first-ever China-Indonesia Provincial Index, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at mapping China’s influence across 38 provinces in Indonesia. The index evaluates China’s engagement across eight key sectors—including the economy, academia, media, technology, and society—revealing how the intensity of its influence varies across regions. Notable findings include Central Java’s perfect score in the economic sector, strong academic collaboration in Jakarta and Yogyakarta, and a significant Chinese presence in the media and technology sectors in West Nusa Tenggara and Jakarta. The public discussion highlighted the regional dynamics of China’s influence in Indonesia, the role of local governments, and the sectoral implications of China’s engagement. This forum provided an essential platform for researchers, policymakers, and the general public to engage with the data and gain deeper insights into the strategic impact of China-Indonesia relations at the local level.
