Alternative Economic Growth Model in North Maluku

Description:

In an effort to reduce dependence on the extractive sector, CELIOS in collaboration with several related agencies of North Maluku province, held a discussion in an effort to maximize the potential of non-mining economy in North Maluku. This discussion brought together CELIOS as a civil society group with Bappeda (Local Govt Planning Agency), the Agriculture Agency, and the North Maluku Marine and Fisheries Agency to discuss the potential of non-mining economy as an alternative to dependence on the mining sector, while also highlighting the serious impacts of mining expansion, as well as the need for a more sustainable development program.

A number of potential sectors such as local agriculture, marine, and fisheries were discussed as the basis of an environmentally friendly and community-based economy, with a focus on strengthening community livelihoods through a restorative economic approach and inclusive resource management.

This discussion also explored opportunities for developing a number of community-based renewable energy, such as solar, wind and microhydro, especially for small islands. This initiative is considered important to support a just energy transition and expand access to clean electricity independently by the community.
