Annual China-Indonesia Survey: Insights into Indonesian Perception of China 2025

The China–Indonesia Survey 2025, conducted by CELIOS, provides a comprehensive overview of Indonesian public perceptions toward China amid growing bilateral engagement. The survey examines key areas including the economy, politics, technology, education, security, and the energy transition, as well as public views on President Prabowo’s closeness to China and its implications for diplomacy, national sovereignty, and global positioning. Key findings show a broadly positive outlook, with 66% of respondents viewing Indonesia–China relations favorably and 92% trusting China as a reliable partner in the energy transition. Interest in Chinese electric vehicles is strong but cautious, while China has emerged as the top destination for Indonesian students abroad, driven by scholarships and affordability.

The survey also highlights strategic considerations shaping public opinion. Support for Indonesia’s membership in BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) is nearly unanimous, with respondents citing market access and reduced dependence on Western powers. While economic cooperation dominates perceptions, issues of defense and sovereignty remain relevant, indicating a pragmatic yet cautious public stance. Overall, the findings provide policymakers with actionable insights for maximizing economic opportunities, managing strategic risks, and navigating Indonesia’s evolving relationship with China within a dynamic global geopolitical landscape.
