This study explored Indonesian public perceptions of the climate crisis, government performance, presidential candidates’ commitments, and the role of mass media. Findings show that 81% of respondents agree the government should declare a climate emergency, with the highest support in urban areas and among those aged 15–34. However, 60% believe the government has yet to formulate effective climate policies.
Online media most active in covering environmental issues were CNN Indonesia and Seputar Indonesia (32%), followed by INews, Detik, and Kompas. The study also found Anies Baswedan perceived as the most environmentally sensitive candidate (84% positive sentiment), followed by Ganjar Pranowo (44%) and Prabowo Subianto (89%). Social media analysis revealed discussions on the energy transition are fragmented into four main communities centered around key actors.
Based on these findings, the study recommends that 2024 election candidates prioritize environmental issues, support sustainable project financing schemes such as green bonds or debt-for-climate initiatives, revise regulations harmful to the environment, and encourage voters to assess candidates based on real commitments to energy transition and environmental protection.
